Built to protect, not to stalk
How Protect My Face ensures its detection tools are used by people defending their own likeness, not by bad actors trying to track someone else.
The obvious question
Any service that helps detect where a face appears online has to answer one question before anything else: how do you stop someone from using it to track another person? It is the first thing people ask, and it should be. A tool built for protection is only worth building if it cannot be turned into a tool for surveillance.
We took this seriously from the start. Protect My Face is designed so that the only person who can use the system to monitor a face is the person that face belongs to. That is not just a policy. It is enforced through multiple layers of monitoring and detection that work together to prevent misuse.
Suspicious activity triggers additional checks
The system continuously monitors for patterns of behavior that do not align with legitimate use. When suspicious activity is detected, additional checks are triggered automatically.
This means that unusual behavior will flag an account for further review, and our team follows up directly when it does.
Multiple layers, not a single gate
Security that relies on a single checkpoint is easy to defeat. That is why Protect My Face uses multiple overlapping systems rather than one safeguard. Some of these layers are visible to the user. Others operate in the background and are deliberately not disclosed.
This layered approach means that even if someone found a way past one safeguard, they would encounter others. The goal is to make misuse impractical at every stage, not just at the front door.
We would rather lose a user than enable harm
There are cases where our systems flag an account and we cannot resolve the concern with certainty. In those situations, we err on the side of caution. Access is restricted or revoked entirely. We would rather turn away a legitimate user who can come back later than allow the possibility of someone using the platform to harm another person.
This is a deliberate tradeoff. Growth matters, but not more than the safety of the people this service exists to protect. If there is any doubt about whether an account is being used appropriately, we act first and investigate second.
Trust is the product
Protect My Face only works if people trust it. That trust depends on knowing the system cannot be weaponized against them. Every behavioral check and every background safeguard exists to maintain that trust. Without it, the service has no reason to exist.
